Referring to a journal on “Realities of Management Promotion” written by Marian N. Ruderman & Patricia J. Ohlott, there are 36 reasons for promotion which categorized into 5; Preparation, Attitudes, People Skills, Personal Attributes and Context. Four of these categories relate to individual achievements, characteristics or ability.
The reasons cited for promotion most often falls into the category of preparation; well prepared in terms of Track Records (61%) and Technical Skills (50%). Reason that can be categorized as people skills includes; Basic Interpersonal & Communication Skills (45%), Ability to Build Team (47%). Other reasons can be put into category of personal attributes; The potential for growth as an executives (59%) and Intelligence (45%).
Learning from above common realities of management promotional reasons, no wonder there are many managers perform poorly after being promoted despite of their track records and technical skills, they lack of people skills, personal attributes and job context.
It is obvious therefore, individuals who are promoted needed to continuously develop those four categories of managerial & leadership attributes in order to be successful upon promotion - performing the required performance; managing and leading people.
